Tracking Links
The Tracking Links settings page is not available in RushHour yet. Everything below describes a page that is being prepared; the options and their starting values may still change before it is released.
Settings → Tracking Links is where a company decides whether its dispatchers may share a public tracking page for an order, and how much that page reveals. For what a link is and how to use one, see Tracking links.
Enable public tracking links
One switch turns the whole feature on or off for your company. It starts off, so nothing changes for a company that never opens this page.
| The switch is… | What that means |
|---|---|
| Off | The Copy tracking link and Send by email actions are hidden everywhere, and every link your company has ever issued stops opening — including links you already emailed to customers. |
| On | Dispatchers with the Manage tracking links permission can create, copy, email and revoke links, and the links they issue open for anyone holding them. |
Because turning the switch off cuts off links that are already in customers' hands, treat it as a way to stop sharing, not as a way to tidy up. To stop one particular link, revoke that link on its order instead.
Truck position on the public page
This choice decides how much of the driver's current location a person holding the link may see. It applies to every link your company issues.
| Option | What a reader of the link sees | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate area | A rough area, roughly a kilometre across, around the vehicle's latest position — and only while the shipment is moving. | The starting value. |
| Last completed stop only | No location at all. The page says which stop was completed and when, and still shows the estimated arrival. | The most private option. |
| Live position while heading to the shipment | The vehicle's exact position, refreshed about every 15 seconds — but only while the driver is on the way to one of that shipment's stops. At any other time, and near a blind stop, the page falls back to the approximate area. | Off unless you choose it. |
Things to weigh before choosing the live option:
- A link can be forwarded. Anyone who ends up with the address can watch the vehicle during the window described above, and RushHour cannot tell who they are.
- It is your drivers' location. Deciding to share it with your customers is your company's decision to make, not RushHour's — so tell your drivers before you turn it on. The Driver app's own guidance about location is in Location problems.
- The page never shows a history. In every option, a reader sees at most where the vehicle is now, never where it has been, and nothing at all when the last known position is too old to be worth showing.
- Blind stops stay blind. A stop whose address is hidden from the recipient is drawn as a rough area rather than a pin in every option, and the live option deliberately stops being exact when the vehicle is near one.
Changing this option applies to links that are already out there, not only to new ones. Move it towards Last completed stop only and every open page shows less from its next refresh.
Link lifetime
Set how many days a newly issued link keeps working. The page tells you the smallest and largest values it accepts, and an order's Tracking tab shows the exact expiry date for its own link.
Changing the lifetime affects links issued after the change. Links already in customers' hands keep the expiry date they were given.
Who can change these settings
Changing this page needs the Profile tab - Edit Order Info permission — see Roles and permissions. Without it the page still opens, but the switch, the position options, the lifetime field and the save button are all read-only.
Being able to change this page and being able to share a link are different things: sharing a link needs the Manage tracking links permission on the user's role.
