Assign stops to routes

Assigning puts an order's pickups and deliveries on a driver's route. You need the Assign/Unassign Orders permission on the Dispatch board (or Assign/Unassign Order when you work from the order).

The Unassigned Orders panel

The Unassigned Orders panel lists the work that isn't on a route yet, with the total count at the top.

  • Use the list at the top to show Pickup & Delivery, only Pickup, or only Delivery stops.
  • Select the search button to search the list.
  • When there are many orders, use the page numbers at the bottom.

Each card is one order and shows:

  • The order number — select it to open the order in a new browser tab — and the customer.
  • The order's pickup and delivery stops, each with its date and time, address, handling flags (such as Fragile or Refrigerated) and items.
  • A priority icon on each stop. Select it to change the stop's priority.
  • A phone icon when the stop has a contact number. Hover it to see and copy the number; select it to record the outcome of your call.
  • The Print BOL button.
  • The ⋮ menu, with View to open the order and Void to delete the order after you confirm.
  • The Auto Reroute button, which suggests a route for the order. See Get a route suggestion.

Helpful hints while you assign

  • Select an unassigned card and the route cards show how far each route is from it — by zone and by truck — and mark one route from each of the nearest zones as Nearest zones. This is a rough guide only.
  • Select a route card and unassigned cards within 10 miles of that route's truck, in a straight line, are marked Near this truck, with the distance. The date and whether the truck can take the load are not checked.

Drag and drop

Drag an unassigned order card onto a route card, or into the stop list of an expanded route. All the stops on that card are added to the route.

Add stops from a route card

  1. On a route card, open the + menu and choose Pickup & Delivery, Pickup or Delivery.
  2. A list of unassigned stops opens. Pick the date, and filter by zip, city or state if needed.
  3. Select the stops you want. Select all for order selects all of an order's stops; Select all matching selects everything listed. Select Load More to see more stops.
  4. Select Add.

Get a route suggestion

On an unassigned order card, select Auto Reroute. RushHour compares your active routes and opens Add to a route:

  • The best fit route, how many kilometers the stop would add to it, and the position the stop would take on the route.
  • Select See other routes to compare the alternatives.
  • Turn on Also re-optimize this route to reorder every stop on the route after adding this one, by distance or by priority. Leave it off to add the stop without moving the others.
  • Select Add to route to assign the stop.

If no active route can take the stop, the dialog says so.

Assign from the map

With a route selected and unassigned stops shown on the map, click the map to draw a selection circle around the stops you want, then select Assign. See The Dispatch board.

From the order

You can also assign drivers without leaving the order workspace. Assign Order to Driver appears only on orders that still have stops to assign. It isn't shown on quotes or drafts, or on orders that must be assigned stop by stop (see below).

  1. Open the order. In the right panel, select Assign Order to Driver, then confirm. If some items haven't been sent to a delivery yet, RushHour tells you how many and asks whether to continue. The Assign Driver list opens.
  2. The list shows your drivers' routes, each with the driver, the truck and whether the route is Available or Full for this order's stops. Search by name, route or vehicle, filter by availability or by country, and look out for the Outside order country badge on drivers registered in a different country from the order's stops.
  3. Open a route's Assign Driver menu and choose Assign driver for Pickup and Delivery, Assign driver for only Pickup or Assign driver for only Delivery.
  4. Select Done.

To assign a single stop, open the stop's Assign Driver menu on the Order Details tab and choose the driver. International orders and orders that need a hub hand-off are assigned stop by stop in this way.

The right panel then lists the drivers the order is assigned to, with their trucks. Select View in Dispatch to see the order on the board.

Reorder stops on a route

Expand the route card and drag a stop up or down its list. The new order is saved straight away. To reorder the whole route automatically, see Optimize a route.

Move stops between routes

Drag a stop from an expanded route onto another route card or another route's stop list.

When the order has other stops on the original route, RushHour asks what to move:

OptionMoves
Whole orderAll the order's pickups, deliveries and transfer stops on the route. Recommended, because it keeps them together.
Only selected itemJust the stop you dragged.
Only all pickupsAll the order's pickups.
Only all deliveriesAll the order's deliveries.

Moving only pickups or only deliveries splits the order across routes. If the order has transfer stops or a hub hand-off, RushHour warns you that they will be deleted; you can create new ones after the move if needed.

Some stops can't be moved to another route:

  • Transfer stops stay on their own route. Delete the transfer instead.
  • A delivery whose transfer has already been confirmed can't be moved until the transfer is undone.

Unassign stops

  1. Expand the route and drag the stop into the Unassigned Orders panel.
  2. If the order has other stops on the route, choose Yes to unassign all its pickups and deliveries, or No to unassign only this stop.
  3. RushHour asks Is it attempt?
    • Choose No to simply take the stop off the route.
    • Choose Yes when the driver tried and failed to complete the stop. Enter the Reason, the Reattempt Date, and the start and end of the attempt, then select Confirm Attempt. The stop returns to the unassigned list.
    • Choose Cancel to leave the stop where it is.

From the order, you can also remove a driver in the right panel, or choose Unassign Driver in a stop's menu.

Limits

A route can't hold more stops than your company's Max Route Addresses setting. If adding stops would go over the limit, RushHour stops the assignment and asks you to complete stops on the route or raise the limit. See Maximum stops per route.

Coming soon
  • Unassigned cards will warn you in advance when an order has more stops than a route may hold, or more than the truck can carry, and selecting a card will rank the routes by how well they can take it.
  • The Auto Reroute button on unassigned cards will be renamed Find Route.
  • An Ask AI button next to Find Route will ask the AI assistant which route should take the order. Nothing changes until you apply its suggestion. See Ask AI for an unassigned order.
